January and February (2010)
On New Years Eve (new style), the rector of the parish, Fr. Victor, returned to Boston after a one week visit to the Holy Land. During his trip, Fr. Victor spoke at the Mount of Olives Convent and the Convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane on the final five months of Fr. Joasaph's life. Father Victor served a panikhida on the ninth day of the repose of Archimandrite Joasaph at the Mt. of Olives Convent. During his stay, Fr. Victor also had an audience with His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilus of Jerusalem, where they talked about Fr. Joasaph, and His Beatitude shared his views on the state of the Orthodox Church in today's world.
Father Victor also had an opportunity to visit a few holy places, including Jacob's Well, where he was able to serve a moleben for his wife, Svetlana. (Jacob's Well is the place where the conversation between our Lord and the Samaritan woman, St. Svetlana, took place). On December 30, Fr. Victor visited St. Savva's Monastery with Rassophor Monk Peter and Professor Alexey Vikhlinin, a parishioner of Holy Epiphany who was in Jerusalem for an academic conference. Since Father Joasaph died on the Feast Day of St. Savva, the pilgrims sang eternal memory before the relics of the monastery's patron saint. For pictures of Fr. On January 10, our parish successfully held the annual Parish celebration of Nativity and children's yolka at St. John of Damascus parish hall. At the yolka, the Rector passed on to the children a blessing from Mother Moiseia, the Abbess of Mt. of Olives Convent. Each child received a card with an image of the cave where our Lord was born. Rehearsal photos can be seen here. -- For pictures of the parish yolka, click here. -- For more pictures, click here.
On January 17, Fr. Thomas brought the Kursk Root Icon to Holy Epiphany Church. The Icon was in the church for all services associated with the Feast Day of Theophany. On Wednesday, January 20, Hieromonk Roman, the choir director of Holy Trinity Monastery (Jordanville, NY), joined the clergy and faithful for a moleben and akathist service to the Mother of God before the miracle-working Icon. The Sunday after Theophany, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, made an archpastoral visit to our parish and led the vigil service and Divine Liturgy. During the Small Entrance, His Eminence awarded Fr. Victor the gold cross and Fr. Thomas the nabedrenik for their faithful service to the Church. For pictures of Vladyka's visit, click here. On February 6, a bus full of teachers, parents and children of our parish school, along with members of the parish choir, visited the Synodal Cathedral in New York City to venerate the relics of St. John Chrysostom. (For pictures, click here. )
The following week, a group of our children together with parents and teachers spontaneously put on a short «Maslenitsa» play. (Click here for pictures.) The following day began the Great Fast with the reading of the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete.
